NIFA Youth Soccer Camps

Decade of growth and Youth Soccer Development.

Dano Thorne - Head Coach and founder.

In the spring of 2001 Aboriginal soccer communities commented on the ladies program which was preparing for another overseas trip to Australia. I was asked if there was anything for the youth of BC regarding soccer development. I said no , so I thought I should start a NIFA program for our first nations youth.  As a Level 4 soccer coach and BC Staff Coach at the renowned Shawnigan Lake Soccer Academy I elt I had gained enough experience to start my own program. I needed assistant coaches, I thought of mainstream elite coaches but I then thought of the ladies I coached and needed to make money for our tours.   Therefore in July 2001 we travelled to the community of Mt. Currie where 45 youth took part in our two day weekend NIFA Soccer camp . Karajan Willie and Vanessa Daniels were my first staff coaches. Karajan would eventually receive the national aboriginal women coach of the year as my asst coach at Vancouver Island University for 2004 , I was the first eve winner of the same award in 2000.
Very quickly our NIFA program gained a positive reputation across BC and communities witnessed growth of their young soccer players. It was always my intention to make it affordable for communities and families to come participate, other programs were very costly.
We worked with great soccer communities like Cowichan, Namgis, Sechelt, Snuneymuxw, Campbell River, Mt.Currie, Squamish, Seabird Island , Lillooet, Smithers, West Bank, Bella Coola, Kingcome ,Pt. Hardy, Sliammon, Esquimalt, Pacheedaht  and friendship centres, We have also worked and travelled to develop Team BC, team Alberta and the Nortwest Territory. Plans for the summer of 2012 are exciting. As the founder and Head coach I wanted to thank my assistant coaches through the years. Karajan, Venessa, Katie Day, Racheal Allen, Samantha Schroeder , Lonnie Lee Peters, Bill Wasden and my longest serving staff coach Tara Thorne.
